In order to understand the New Testement, we need to understand the Old Testement.

Sample Mini-Lesson:
Christ left us with a Church. He did not leave us with a Bible. His Church, the Holy Catholic Church, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, compiled the teachings and letters of the Apostles and their early church Students. By 370-390 AD a Bible was accepted by the Catholic Bishops and was translated into Latin - the predominate language of the times, This is the "Latin Vulgate" - translated by St, Jerome.  This was THE only Christian Bible until the 1500's. 

Sample Mini-Lesson 2:
We confess our sins to a priest because CHRIST TOLD US TO. "Authority to priest".:
In James 5:16 he remins us of His Jewish tradition of their confessing sins to one another*
In John 20: 21-23 He very specifically gives His Apostles and Bishops of His Church, the authority to forgive sins - In His Name**

**John 20:21-23Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
